Q. What is a Rapid COVID-19 Test?

A. A rapid COVID-19 test is either a PCR or antigen test that is designed to detect the presence of active strains of COVID-19.

Q. How does Rapid COVID Testing Work?

A. A nasal swab is used to collect a tissue sample. From there, the sample is analyzed in our on-site lab and a positive or negative result is found. Results are found shortly after the sample is collected.

Q. What should I do if I have a positive result?

A. Begin your quarantine process and if you have been in contact with others, let them know about your diagnosis. Speak with your doctor about your symptoms and the best treatment options for your case.

Q. What should I do if I have a negative test?

A. If your test comes back negative, you should continue to wear a mask, maintain a distance of six feet, and wash your hands frequently. Monitor yourself for symptoms, as the test could have been conducted too early.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Symptoms of COVID-19 may include:

  • Recent loss of taste and/or smell
  • High fever (over 102 F)
  • Headache, muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Chest and nasal congestion
  • Dry, persistent cough
  • Shortness of breath
This list of symptoms is not all-inclusive. You may experience other symptoms, or a combination of symptoms, that are not listed here. The only way to know if you have COVID is by getting tested.

How does rapid testing work?

Similarly to standard PCR testing, a swab is taken to retrieve a tissue sample.

However, this swab is taken from higher up in the nasal cavity. The process is still painless to the patient, though some mild discomfort may be experienced.

After the sample is taken, it is brought to the lab on our premises where it is mixed with a solution specific to the test.

The solution includes chemicals that are able to break apart the virus when present, which exposes the genetic material, as well as agents that can recognize the virus-specific genome. The genome is then replicated in targeted molecules from your sample which can detect the virus.

After the sample has been processed and analyzed, the results will be delivered to the screen on the testing device and printed. Results will be returned to patients the day they are tested via phone call or email.

Benefits of rapid testing for COVID-19

By taking the rapid COVID-19 diagnostic test, patients are able to get the results they need as soon as possible without putting others more at risk of infection and themselves more at risk of complications.

Patients who receive positive test results should self-isolate immediately and contact anyone they may have been in contact with in recent days.

If you have a negative test result, you should continue following local and federal health and safety guidelines, including practicing social distancing when in public areas, even outdoors. Wear a mask or protective face covering that covers your nose and mouth when outside of your home.

AFC Urgent Care FAQs

  • Why does AFC provide two different COVID tests?

We offer a rapid test because they provide highly reliable results on the spot; however, they do produce more false negatives than the RT-PCR COVID-19 Test. Doing both tests is our way of ensuring that you get the most accurate results possible without having to put your life on hold.

  • How long does it take to get a COVID test?

We're able to get many patients in and out in a matter of minutes, but the length of time you'll spend in our clinic will depend on wait times that day.

  • How much does it cost to get a COVID test?

That will ultimately depend on your insurance coverage. Presently, many people with insurance are able to get tested at no charge. If you’re uninsured, AFC’s cash pay prices are highly competitive – contact us for the details.
